Charcoal has been used since ancient times to treat a variety of ailments and to assist in neutralising ingested poisons. Its healing effects have been well documented by the Egyptians as early as 1550 BC.

Charcoal was also traditionally used by the Native Americans to treat an upset stomach by powdering the charcoal and mixing it with water.
