Bee Pollen: What It Is and Why We Love It

Those little golden granules may not look particularly remarkable, but bee pollen has earned a long-standing place on the shelves at Living Valley.

Long before “superfoods” filled supermarket aisles, bee pollen was being enjoyed as a naturally occurring wholefood. Today, it's one of those ingredients people are rediscovering as they look for simple ways to add more variety to what they eat.

Here's what it actually is, what's inside it and why you'll find it in the Living Valley range.

What exactly is bee pollen?

Bee pollen begins with flowers.

As honeybees forage, they collect pollen from flowering plants and combine it with small amounts of nectar and bee secretions. They carry it back towards the hive in tiny granules — creating what we know as bee pollen.

Because it comes from plants, its exact composition can naturally vary depending on the flowers visited, season and geographical area.

What's naturally found in bee pollen?

Bee pollen is a complex natural food containing a mixture of carbohydrates, proteins, fats and naturally occurring plant compounds.

Research has also identified a variety of micronutrients and phytochemicals in different bee pollens, including carotenoids, polyphenols and other plant compounds.

That doesn't make bee pollen a cure-all — and we don't think it needs to be one.

Its appeal is that it's an interesting, naturally derived wholefood that can be incorporated into a varied diet.

Why bee pollen has a place at Living Valley

Bee pollen has been part of the Living Valley approach to food and wellbeing for many years.

Our philosophy has always placed an emphasis on real food, quality ingredients and looking carefully at where our food comes from. The Living Valley 100% Australian Chemical Free Bee Pollen is part of our own range and remains one of the products people often associate with Living Valley.

For returning guests, it can also be a familiar little taste of the retreat at home.

How can you use bee pollen?

One of the nicest things about bee pollen is how easy it is to incorporate into food.

Its small granules have a subtly floral, slightly earthy flavour and can be sprinkled over yoghurt, smoothie bowls or fresh fruit, blended into smoothies, or simply enjoyed in the way directed on the product packaging.

As with any food, more isn't necessarily better. Follow the directions provided with the product and enjoy it as one part of a balanced and varied diet.

Is bee pollen suitable for everyone?

Bee pollen isn't appropriate for everybody.

Because it contains pollen and other bee-derived components, it can cause allergic reactions in some people. Anyone with pollen allergies, allergies to bee products or a history of significant allergic reactions should seek appropriate medical advice before consuming bee pollen.

Pregnant or breastfeeding people, children, or anyone taking medication or managing a health condition should also seek professional advice if they're unsure whether a supplement or concentrated food product is appropriate for them.

A little jar with a long Living Valley history

Wellness trends come and go. Bee pollen's place at Living Valley isn't really about trends.

It's one of the simple, natural foods that has been part of our world for years — and one we continue to make available for those who enjoy incorporating it into their everyday routine.
