What Is Tallow Skincare? Everything You Need to Know
Tallow skincare has become one of the most talked-about natural beauty trends in recent years. But while it may be having a moment now, using rendered animal fats in skincare is far from new.
Rich, simple and deeply moisturising in feel, tallow has found its way back into modern skincare routines as more people take a closer look at the ingredients they use on their skin.
So, what exactly is tallow skincare, why is it suddenly everywhere, and what should you know before trying it?
What is tallow?
Tallow is a purified, rendered fat traditionally derived from cattle. At room temperature it has a rich, balm-like consistency, which makes it particularly well suited to products designed to create a protective, moisturising layer on the skin.
In skincare, the quality of the tallow and the complete formulation matter. Rather than thinking of tallow as a miracle ingredient on its own, it is better understood as one possible base for a rich moisturising balm.
Why is tallow being used in skincare?
One of the main reasons tallow has attracted attention is its richness.
Tallow is an occlusive ingredient, meaning it can help form a barrier over the surface of the skin and reduce moisture loss. This can make tallow-based balms particularly appealing to people who enjoy richer moisturisers or whose skin tends to feel dry.
It also contains naturally occurring fatty acids and fat-soluble compounds. You'll often see much bigger claims made about these online, but the presence of a nutrient in an ingredient doesn't necessarily tell us how much of it will be absorbed by the skin or what effect it will have.
For us, the appeal of tallow skincare is much simpler: a thoughtfully formulated tallow balm can provide a beautifully rich way to moisturise the skin.
Is tallow suitable for everyone?
Like almost everything in skincare, there isn't one product that's right for every skin type.
A rich balm may feel wonderful on dry or mature-feeling skin, particularly as part of an evening routine. Those with oily, acne-prone or congestion-prone skin may find a heavier, occlusive product less suitable.
If you're introducing any new skincare product, start slowly and see how your own skin responds. A patch test is also a sensible step, particularly if you have sensitive skin.
Meet Giselle Eve Rose Tallow Balm
Tallow isn't simply something we've added to the Living Valley Shop because it became popular.
The Giselle Eve Rose Tallow Balm was created by Living Valley CEO and Giselle Eve founder Giselle Martin as part of her natural skincare range.
Handmade with carefully selected natural and organic ingredients, the formula uses certified organic grass-fed beef tallow as its base, blended with macadamia oil, jojoba oil and rosehip seed oil.
It is then combined with a botanical blend including geranium, frankincense, myrrh, rose and carrot seed essential oils, alongside rosemary leaf extract.
The result is a rich, aromatic balm designed to moisturise and nourish the feel of the skin. Giselle particularly loves it as part of an evening skincare ritual, when a richer moisturiser can be left to settle into the skin overnight.
How do you use a tallow balm?
A little goes a long way.
Warm a small amount between clean fingertips before gently pressing or massaging it into the skin. Because of its rich texture, you may find you need considerably less than you would with a conventional lotion or cream.
It can be used as the moisturising step of your routine, and many people prefer a balm like this in the evening or whenever their skin is feeling particularly dry.
Choosing tallow skincare
The return of tallow is an interesting part of a much bigger shift towards simpler, more considered skincare.
But “natural” doesn't automatically mean better for every person, and tallow doesn't need exaggerated claims to make it interesting.
Look at the complete ingredient list, consider your own skin type and choose a formulation that feels right for the way you like to care for your skin.
For us, that's exactly what skincare should be: considered, enjoyable and personal.
