Use in your favourite tooth powder recipe, make into a poultice for external application or mix a teaspoon in a large glass of water to assist with the symptoms of diarrhoea, nausea or bloating and flatulence.
Charcoal has been used since ancient times to treat a variety of ailments and to assist in neutralising ingested poisons. Its healing effects have been well documented by the Egyptians as early as 1550 BC. Charcoal was also traditionally used by the Native Americans to teat an upset stomach by powdering the charcoal and mixing it with water.
Activated Charcoal is carbon that has been treated with oxygen and can be used internally to bind to irritating or toxic substances in the stomach and intestines. It is then excreted in the stool without harm to the body. Activated charcoal has a large surface area that works as a sponge and can absorb up to 80 times its own volume in poisons.
Charcoal has been used when treating other intestinal disorders such as diarrhoea, constipation and cramps. By adding water to the powder to make a poultice, activated charcoal can be used as an external application to alleviate pain and itching from bites and stings. Charcoal poultices can also be helpful in the treatment of swelling, inflammation, bruising, joint injuries and arthritis. Or it can be taken internally with water to combat gastroenteritis (stomach bug), diarrhoea and food poisoning.
Please Note: When taken internally charcoal may interfere with the absorption of medications and nutrients such as vitamins or minerals. It is recommended to take at least tow hours before or after supplements or medications. We also advise that you seek emergency care in the event of serious illness.
This ancient remedy has not lost its effectiveness over hundreds of years and is still a 'must' in every modern day first aid kit.
